Veil of Darkness Storyline

The land of Drakos in the northwestern reaches of Angrakka, the continent of chaos, has been enveloped in an unnatural purple mist. Word of the impenetrable violet haze has traveled across the world of Dragonica. At first told in hushed voices behind clenched teeth along quiet mountain paths, talk of its perilous gloom now fills the busy streets of Port of the Winds. As fear gives way to panic, two questions grip the populace: what is the source of the disturbance and what does it portend? The foul fog's influence is spreading and the good people of Dragonica are on their guard, counting the days since this shroud of shadows, this veil of darkness descended.
Many NPCs in towns will reference this event when selecting “Conversation” with them.

Increased Level Cap

The maximum level has been increased to 65.

New Quests

Over 40 new quests including new rare monster quests.

Improved Dungeon Bosses

Updated hit point and attack power amounts for all dungeon bosses.

New Pet System

Three different types of pets, Birdy, Puppy and Kitty, can be earned from Pet Sellers Amy and Edith by completing quests at level 20, 30, and 40. When equipped, these pets provide gameplay bonuses. Pets will require [Pet Food] regularly lest they grow exhausted and cease to assist you!
The Pet System will continue to develop over the course of upcoming content updates.

Emporia War 2.0

The top eight guilds that bid Guild Points for the right to challenge the guild that owns Emporia will now fight each other in a series of seven bracketed matches. The guild that wins these challenger matches earns the opportunity to fight the Emporia-owning guild in a final showdown. Add updated fighting areas and Emporia fight rules for a wholly reimagined guild-versus-guild tournament.

Advanced Crafting System

Items can now be enchanted up to +20. Enhanced graphic effects are added to the item after enchanting beyond +15. Also introduced are [Reinforced Insurance Scroll] items which protect the target items of your crafting from +15 to +20.
Streamlined interface for enchanting and soulcrafting items.

New Cash Shop Item Types

Vanity Items: Cash Shop items that allow players to change their character's Hair Style, Hair Color, and even Face.
Gotcha! Items: These low-priced Cash Shop items provide a random item including such as Inventory Slot Expansion items, Experience Potions, and Eternity Potions. Available by early December.
Recall Cards: Cash Shop items that allow players to save their location in any Field Map.

Improved Mission Map System

Entirely redesigned scoring system and updated level requirements.

New Function for Gada Coins

Upon successfully beating a Mission Map, [Gada Coin] items can be spent to grant an additional item roll for a chance to receive a random reward.

Personalized Character Cards

These customizable personal profiles are free and provided as a reward for completing a special quest chain.

New Ways to Emote

Four new emote dance routines.
New Float Emotes, a variety of emoticons that display over the character's head. Initial Float Emotes will be Warrior, Magician, Archer, Thief, Puppy, and Sangka.

Improved In-Game Journal

More helpful information and better explanations of soulcrafting, enchanting, and accomplishments.

The days grow dark in the world of Dragonica. A bitter wind sweeps through the towns of El Grego and Angrakka. The sky is cold and dim. This foreboding atmosphere is harbinger to what's soon to come.

Terrible creatures have been seen along the edge of the deep woods. They skulk and lurk and lie in wait for easy prey. Villages threatened by these unspeakable beasts have started to change. The people have taken to decorating themselves as horrible monsters, covering their homes in bizarre lights, and carving crops into distorted visages.

A macabre festival environment fills the air as the Nights of Fright are upon us!

Guild-Versus-Guild Combat on an Epic Scale

Introduction
Do you wish to test your mettle against challenging new foes? To take on enemies in such quantities that the ground quakes as they charge? To prove you and your allies victorious in a grand theater of battle? Enter the Emporia War, an arena for guilds of the powerful to settle old scores and establish new rivalries. This guild-versus-guild battleground pits a maximum of twenty-five guild members on either side against each other. After the dust of fifty heroes locked in combat settles and a winner is decided, the champions lay claim to Emporia, a private city and the guild's prize for their triumph. However, the champion guild can be challenged by clans looking to claim the city for themselves. Every week, the gauntlet will be thrown down and the Emporia War will commence!

Platforms and Pagodas
Emporia War introduces two new environments. The fight takes place in a fog-covered courtyard shrouded in night and dimly lit by a full, pale moon. Mind your step as the cobblestones are slick with moss and rocky cliffs edge the many platforms of this ancient battlefield which mysteriously floats above darkened clouds. Guilds would be wise to study the map's layout to maximize tactical advantages and devise plans of attack. Traverse bridges and hyperjumps to reach the Sub Cores, winged dragons made of rock clutching glowing spheres. Reach the center platform to find the Main Cores, huge stone drake sculptures mounted upon large globes.

Should you succeed against all opponents, your guild will gain access to the city of Emporia. In stark contrast with the battlefield's moonlit platforms, Emporia itself is bathed in light. At its center stands a giant colorful pagoda ringed by mist and floating lotus blossoms. Here, you and your guild can meet privately and plan how to defend your hold on this unique prize.

A New Challenger Approaches!
Emporia War is held every Thursday at 7:00 PM Pacific, allowing guilds to challenge the guild currently occupying Emporia city. The challenger guild is determined by a bidding system. Guilds who seek to fight the guild currently occupying Emporia city can bid Guild Experience by clicking the Community button in the lower-right corner of the game and then clicking the Emporia button in the Community window. Only guild leaders can bid guild experience and thereby submit the guild to the Emporia War. Guild experience is gained from daily (repeatable) guild quests granted by NPC Donny who is found in all towns.

The challenge (bidding) period begins Tuesday, 48 hours before the battle commences, and ends 24 hours later. This grants the challenger guild and defending champion guild a full day to marshal their forces and prepare for battle. The guild that bids the most guild experience is named the challenger guild. All other guilds lose the guild experience that was bid. The defending champions guild does not lose any guild experience regardless of the outcome.

How to Wage Emporia War
When the game's clock strikes 7:00 PM Pacific on Thursday, the Emporia War commences. The challenger and defending champion guilds are able to invite new members before the battle but not during it. There is a maximum of 25 participating characters per guild making for a total of 50 combatants. Participants are able to join 30 minutes prior to the start of the fight but cannot commence combat. A countdown appears to signal the time remaining until the start of Emporia War at which point the map resets to allow for player-versus-player combat.

Emporia War lasts for 30 minutes. To win the Emporia War, you must destroy the opposing guild's Main Core first or obtain a greater score than the opposing guild within the time limit.

Points are granted for killing the opposing guild's members and destroying Sub Cores. Enemy characters level 54 or below earns your guild 3 points per kill while enemy characters level 55 or above are worth 5 points per kill. Destroying an enemy Sub Core earns your guild 100 points. Every ten seconds, all dead characters respawn and can continue to fight. A respawn clock can be seen in the center of the screen.

The opposing guild's Main Core is the primary target. As the Main Core is damaged, the crystals they hold will appear damaged as well. Sub Cores periodically restore the Main Core's health. The more Sub Cores there are, the more health the Main Core gains. To destroy the Main Core faster, you should destroy the Sub Cores first. The first guild to destroy their opponent's Main Core wins the match regardless of the score.

Round One... FIGHT!
Want to know more about Emporia War? Although resurrection and teleportation items don't work during battle, healing items do work during battle. There is only one Emporia War for all server channels, you do not need to be in any specific channel to travel to the battle as it is a single instance. When an Emporia War ends, a most valuable player from the winning guild is noted in the resulting scoreboard. All members of that guild can travel to Emporia city immediately.

And, perhaps the most interesting extra tidbit to offer, the very first Emporia War will commence this Thursday October 15th at 7:00 PM Pacific and the guild that wins the bidding phase will be facing off against a guild of THQ*ICE employees named ICETEAM! Introduction
Brave heroes, hearken unto me! The forces of evil have gained a new foothold in the land of Angrakka, the continent of chaos. Deep in the twisted wilds of the Sanctuary of the Gods lies Kundaran Dungeon, a labyrinth of stone corridors and mossy walls. The hulking guardians of these forgotten halls are made of living rock and sinewy vegetation and are bound by a dark magic. The malevolent monster Mutisha the Necromancer has corrupted the land and now controls Aram, an ancient golem crafted by the mist elves to fight the dragons of old. Should you still have your courage, venture forth into the depths of the jungle and seek out Kundaran Dungeon to free Aram from the grip of evil!

The Path to Kundaran Dungeon
Preparation is the key when taking on an adventure of this scale. The quests you take on in the Sanctuary of the Gods will not only harden you but will also reveal more about the mysterious Mutisha, the secretive mist elves, and the origin of Aram. Travel from the oasis of Portobello Village to Pinecone Hills to begin your journey to Mutisha's lair. Accept the Hero Quests you find and complete them to be introduced to Hel Krouzer, a temperamental mist elf. After convincing him and gaining his favor, he will grant you access to Kundaran Dungeon and reward you for successfully destroying Mutisha and deactivating Aram.

Beasts of Flesh and Stone, Rock and Bone
The creatures that call Kundaran Dungeon home are a challenge for even the hardiest of champions. These crumbling halls are densely populated with overgrown fauna such as stinger-brandishing Firefly Sentinels, leaping Kong Frogs, and four-legged, heavily armed Kentar. Travel deeper into the ruins and you'll find enemies hewn from the very living rock. Stone barricades give way to reveal golems, totems, and flying fetishes born of raw earth and given life by Mutisha's dark magical influence. If the dangerous denizens of this corrupted land weren't enough challenege, heroes should also mind their footing here as the walls and floors are laden with all manner of deadly traps. Only the foolhardy fail to look before they leap and you will be leaping often during your descent to the heart of Kundaran Dungeon.

Mutisha the Necromancer
Should you find your way to the very core of Kundaran Dungeon, you will face off with not only Mutisha the Necromancer but the towering golem Aram as well. Mutisha's arsenal of spells includes pulsing energy spheres that track the living, dark meteors, magic-infused boulder novas, the ability to summon stone golems from the surrounding rock cavern, and the power to activate Aram. Controlled by the vile conjurer, Aram awakens at his new dark master's command to unleash pain of gigantic proportions. The golem's attacks are devastating, ranging from slams and sweeps of his enormous arms to stalactite showers and stalagmite spikes. Immune to damage, Aram will only cease his offensive when you slay Mutisha. However, this is no simple task as Mutisha will teleport to dodge your attacks and punish your impudence with pain.

Do You Dare Enter?
Should you succeed, the rewards will be epic. Powerful and finely-crafted weapons can be made of the relics sourced from Aram. Should you fail, your bones will decorate the rotting dungeon walls to serve as a warning to hapless adventurers who follow in your final footsteps. Will you prevail? Be warned, Mutisha is eager to conscript new corpses to join his unliving army.

Dragonica Online will be ending its Open Beta Test with its Grand Opening on Thursday October 15th, 2009. Details: Promote a character to a new higher job class. This character can be an alt, your main, or newly created. Job class promotions occur at levels 20 and 40. This event can only be completed once per THQ*ICE Passport account and only by the first character on that account to do so.
Prize: 1x [Woodster Chair] (100 charges), 5x [Common Health Curative], and 5x [Common Mana Curative]. Prizes can be redeemed in-game from Event Organizer Gatto after completion of the above requirement. See the resulting in-game mail for details.

Clues in the form of haiku will be broadcast in-game to provide hints as to the location. You will then have ten minutes to find the Game Master and open a trade window with them. The first three players to find the Game Master will win 10x [Phoenix Feathers], after which the Game Master will move to a new hiding spot. You'll have three chances to find the Game Master in this first GM-Spotting event!

Today's in-game O/X Quiz started our first regularly occurring event. Every Tuesday at 5:00 PM Pacific (8:00 PM Eastern), players will have a series of five questions asked of them to which two answers will be provided, one bound to "O", the other to "X". The difficulty of the questions increases with each round and the number of participants remaining is revealed after each question. The subject matter of the questions ranges from general information to Dragonica Online trivia.

Interested in participating? Sign on to Dragonica Online before 5:00 PM Pacific on Tuesdays to be able to opt in to the O/X Quiz event when it begins. In-game messaging will be broadcast in advance of it starting.

Event: O/X Quiz
Details: Answer a series of trivia questions in-game to win [Gada Coin]s for use at Vending Machine NPCs.
Prize: 1x [Gada Coin] for at least one correct answer. 3x [Gada Coin]s for five correct answers. Infinite number of winners. Prizes are delivered via in-game mail after the event ends.

Pop quiz, Dragonicans!

This afternoon, more than 1200 players participated in our first in-game O/X quiz. A series of five questions were asked to those who opted in upon being prompted at 4:00 PM Pacific to join. The difficulty increased with each question. Surprisingly, the first question, "how many legs does a cat have", knocked out 200 participants. A single correct answer warranted a single [Gada Coin] while five correct answers earned three [Gada Coin]s.

This was a test of the O/X quiz system. Future O/X quizzes will be announced in advance so keep checking the Contests and Events forum!

Massively multiplayer online role-playing game news website MMORPG.com has published a thorough review of Dragonica Online as experienced in our two-week-old Open Beta Test. The article touches on many key elements of the free-to-play title. Here is the "Reviewer's Opinion" passage:

It's cute, it's cuddly, it has sharp teeth. Dragonica is surprisingly fun if you enjoy fast paced side-scrollers and if you enjoy humor in your games. It's hard to identify with your avatar when your avatar has a body like an egg and you won't find immersion in Dragonica when you are blasting mobs with cannons and stinger missiles. The combat is fast paced with little down time. Mob respawn is fast and players can be easily overwhelmed if they are not careful, so there is challenge involved, especially with positioning since attacks are directional. It is very easy to learn and pick up and with it's appealing graphics, I can easily see kids taking to the game.

One bit of praise I must toss out. Bravo THQ*ICE for the excellent localization effort. The grammar is good, the language flows, the many spelling errors that we've come to expect in Asian games localized for the American market are not evident and there definitely isn't any "Engrish as she is spoke" to be found in Dragonica Online.

What Do I Do Once I Get a Raffle Card?

During the Loot Hunt, players will find Raffle Cards that can be exchanged for special prizes. If you find a Raffle Card you have a few options:

1. Collect
Want to score awesome prizes? Keep all the Raffle Cards you find to be automatically entered into the prize drawing for the Raffle Card you found. Each Raffle Card you find is an entry so the more cards you find the higher your chances of winning will be. Be sure to read the official rules for Raffle Card limitations!

2. Upgrade
Want to battle your way to the top prize? Collect five (5) Raffle Cards of the same type and trade them to Event Organizer Gatto for one (1) Raffle Card of the next level prize. Example: Redeem five (5) [In-Game Prize Pack Raffle Cards] for one (1) [ICE Cash Raffle Card].

3. Redeem
Feel you have enough Raffle Cards? Redeem your Raffle Card for special Boost Balloon items that give a boost to your character’s statistics. The higher the prize level of the Raffle Card you redeem, the better the Boost Balloon’s bonuses! Note: Once a Raffle Card is redeemed for a Boost Balloon it is NOT eligible for the prize raffle. Boost Balloons character bonuses only apply during the Loot Hunt event.

When Do I Receive My Raffle Card?

Raffle Cards have a chance to drop after a monster has been defeated.

Boost Balloons

So maybe you feel like you have enough Raffle Cards? If this is the case, Boost Balloons are the way to go.

During the Loot Hunt, you can redeem your Raffle Cards to Event Organizer Gatto for Boost Balloons. Boost Balloons are special items that give a bonus to your characters’ statistics when equipped. Each Boost Balloon has a level restriction and the bonus for each improves as you receive higher level Boost Balloons.

Note: Once a Raffle Card is redeemed for a Boost Balloon it is NOT eligible for the prize raffle. Boost Balloons have minimum level requirements. Boost Balloons can be used for the duration of the event.

Introduction

Since beginning your journey to the world of dragons, the adventures presented to you have guided your exploration of Dragonica's southwestern continent, El Grego. You have survived arduous battles and served as champion for the forces of good in this land. Despite your many triumphs, dark rumors told between clenched teeth speak of an untamed territory where evil has rooted itself, defying your efforts. The land of Angrakka, the continent of chaos, beckons you to its shores. Will you follow? Will you overcome?

The Path to Angrakka

Angrakka, the southeastern land mass of Dragonica, is separated from its sister continent, El Grego, by molten rock and putrid swamps. Symbolic of the chaotic nature of Angrakka, these rotting lands are teeming with all manner of creatures who seek to make your first steps in their continent your last. If your courage implores you to press on, travel past the Lava Rock Fields and Molten Raeth to arrive in the city of Libra. Here you are apt to find many hapless adventurers too timid to proceed. Beyond this last bastion of sanctuary lies the Dried Woods Swamp, entrance to the greater Smoldering Swamp, a labyrinth of dying vegetation populated by unseemly monsters. Now your Angrakkan adventure truly begins.

New Angrakkan Towns

Should you survive long enough, you may stumble upon the oasis of Portobello Village near overgrown Sanctuary of the Gods or find harborage in Camp Ellora beyond the crystalline Frigid Canyon. With the uncharted maps of Angrakka being home to murderous creatures between levels 40 and 60, these shelters will be a welcome respite. You may also find lost vendors and wandering merchants willing to engage in commerce on the battlefield.

New Job Class Promotions

While exploring the perilous lands of Angrakka, heroes have discovered new disciplines to practice and master. Warriors have honed their abilities to become pious Paladins or brutal Myrmidons. Magicians have channeled their craft to elevate to wholesome Shamans or destructive Warmages. Archers have developed their skills to graduate to crafty Pathfinders or powerful Grenadiers. Thieves have evolved their techniques to become manipulative Harlequins or tricky Ninjas. Ten Ton Hammer: You’ve spent a lot of time localizing Dragonica Online for North America. What would you consider to be the biggest changes that you implemented compared to how the game plays in Asia?

Ben Serviss: The first thing you’ll notice is the text. Well actually, you won’t notice it because we think we did a pretty solid job of making sure that everything in game makes as much sense as it should to players here. In some of the games you’ll play, maybe they’ll have focused more on graphics on the technical side but we really wanted to make sure that our first impression is positive and that people can play the game and not think that this just got off the boat but is a game that was developed, made and crafted specifically for an American audience.

Even more importantly than that is how the experience could work. When we first looked at the game being developed in Korea, there was a focus on grinding through levels and doing a lot of repetitive tasks so we wanted to take everything that was great about this game and remove some of the burden on the player. What we’ve managed to do is adjust the curve enough so that you are not pressured to do the same thing over and over. It’s okay to explore at a pace that you find fun.

Using the above sample comic as a rough example, piece together your own funny, original, or parody comic strip using Dragonica Online screenshots or drawn images. The comic strips must be exactly four panels in length and the content must follow the forum rules but beyond that the format is entirely up to you! There will be ten winners for this contest.

Fixed the claw and katar animations for male and female Thief characters.
Fixed an issue where pressing the Z key while casting didn't show a change in character animation.
Fixed an issue which caused weapons to not display properly after sitting on usable chairs.

Interface

Cash Shop interface has been adjusted for six tabs.
Fixed an error with game map loading.
Monster's debuff icon display size is now uniform.
The space bar "skip" option no longer appears when a quest acceptance window is up.
When the Cash Shop is up, the chat window now increases in width to match.
Fixed a Character Information window display error, character now displays as intended.
Opening the Skill Tree window with the hotkey now causes the "Level Up!" blinking to stop.

Gameplay

Experience given for completing quests and killing monsters has been improved.

Changed party member starting location to be slightly different than party leader upon entering a mission map.

Bring Your Own Balloon to OBT Contest Results

With over 70 submissions entered in the Bring Your Own Balloon to OBT contest, paring down to six finalists was no easy task. As many players commented, selecting the best of those six was even harder. However, in the end, one design prevailed as the popular submission.

We would like to congratulate nyxiss for the winning in-game balloon design, "Poporing <3 Sushi".

As outlined in the original BYOB2OBT thread, the winner and all THQ*ICE Passports that voted in the contest finalists forum poll will receive this design as an in-game balloon item during our Open Beta Test which starts in less than five days. MMORPG-centric news website MMORPG.com has published their preview of Dragonica Online as experienced at Comic-Con 2009 last month. This lengthy article covers a wide range of subjects including basics, gameplay, monetization, player versus player, and other game features. Here's a snippet:

Players in Dragonica will find the usual four generic fantasy classes; Warrior, Mage, Archer & Thief. At level 20, players choose a specialization, and at further levels, attain new titles and skills. In a mixture of combat and questing, players have 60 levels to attain at launch, unlocking hidden skills and combos with amusing animation effects. I had hands on play with a high level archer, firing off what looked like stinger missiles, deploying robot tanks and an AE nuke with fiery destruction raining from above while my character stood and saluted.

Ten Ton Hammer Publishes Introductory Dragonica Online Interview

Comic-Con 2009 gave a great many media representatives the opportunity for a hands-on taste of Dragonica Online. When MMO news website Ten Ton Hammer came to visit, a set of ten questions were asked and answered and have now been published for you to read. Here are two to whet your appetite:

Ten Ton Hammer: How does the art style compare with the combat system?

Evan Berman: Well, the game is completely made up of this candy-coated, light-hearted, chibi-style of art. Very bright color palettes and a variety of textures.

That said, the combat system itself is very sophisticated and pushes players to know their skills, combos, and how to chain their attacks together to perform as efficiently as possible. It's really how players maximize their DPS and their role in the party.

Ten Ton Hammer: What kind of combat scenarios do you have in the game?

Evan: There's a whole variety of them. For example, we have what we call mission maps that have a variety of stages where you clear out little monsters and then you fight a big boss monster at the end. Players are given grades at the end of each stage based on how long it took them to complete the encounter, the number of times they were hit, combos you were able to pull off, etc. The items you receive at the end of your encounter are based off of that grade.

ZAM Interviews THQ*ICE's Community Lead Scapes

The Dragonica Online team played host to thousands of individuals last week at Comic-Con 2009. One of those individuals was a representative from ZAM, formally known as Allakhazam.com, who came with a set of questions about THQ*ICE's first MMORPG offering and Community Lead Evan "Scapes" Berman was there to answer them. Here is a pair of questions and answers to get you started:

ZAM: First of all, we're just a little curious about why THQ*ICE is somewhat behind the other English ports of Dragonica Online - both the European and the SEA-ANZ versions of the game have been out in open beta for at least a month or two.

Evan Berman: We've been working on localizing the game, making the quests more, I suppose, 'approachable' for the Western gamer. Originally, the game had more 'cut and dried' quests, but instead of "kill 10 rats," we want it to be "kill 10 rats because they spoke ill of your mother." We want to give you a reason to want to go kill those rats. So that's been why it's taken a little bit more time. We're also fixing additional bugs and minor graphical things - the things that really will give the game the polish it needs to really succeed. This is part of why we've been taking a little bit longer to release it. We actually just got out of Closed Beta Test about a week ago, and we'll be going into open beta in late summer.

ZAM: There have been a lot of rumors about the 'secret' job class changes available to players who don't class change until level 30, like the 'Duelist' for the Swordsman, the 'Gunslinger' for the Archer, the 'Doctor' for the Magician, and the 'Bard' for the Thief. Are these classes real, but perhaps not implemented yet, or are they really just rumors?

Evan: We too have heard those rumors, and we find them quite... intriguing.

THQ*ICE Returns from Comic-Con 2009

A party of THQ*ICE team members bravely ventured into the depths of San Diego this past week for Comic-Con 2009, the 40th year of the convention. Armed with thousands of stickers and comic books and dozens of wall scrolls, the group faced off against 125,000 event attendees over the course of five days starting with Wednesday's Preview Night. Fighting through sleep deprivation and sore feet, the party emerged victorious, introducing Dragonica Online to a wide audience of gamers both new and seasoned.

We would like to extend special greetings to our new and current members who visited the THQ booth and learned about Dragonica Online firsthand. Images of the event will be published later this week.

GameSpot's Tour of THQ's Comic-Con Booth

After Wednesday's First Hero Tournament proved to be a popular event, we're going forward with an even bigger PvP competition: the Friday Night Battle Royale. This series of timed death-matches will yield three champions but all who participate will be rewarded for their efforts.

Event: Friday Night Battle Royale
Details: Participants compete in a series of ten-minute, nine-man free-for-all battles to come out on top. Tenth spot will be occupied by a THQ*ICE spectator. The best of these preliminary fights will go on to the semi-finals. The best of the semi-finals will go on to the finals, which will yield us our champions.
First Prize: 100 Gold and full armor set of your level and class.
Second Prize: 50 Gold and head armor piece of your level and class.
Third Prize: 25 Gold and backpack item to be determined.
All Participants: 10 Gold and Star Balloon.
Sign-Up Duration: Until 4:00 PM Pacific (7:00 PM Eastern) on Friday July 10th
Duration: Battles start at 6:00 PM Pacific (9:00 PM Eastern) on Friday July 10th

Arigato and Sayonara, Anime Expo 2009

On Thursday, July 2nd, the THQ*ICE team attended Anime Expo 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Armed with wallscrolls, Closed Beta Test invitations, in-game Anime Expo balloon codes, "Wings of Paris" stickers and new video content on a flatscreen plasma playing nonstop, the crew settled in for the long haul in our beautifully designed corner booth on Aisle 400. We loaded up Dragonica Online on our four demo machines, turned the gameplay trailer up and braced for the onslaught of 50,000 attendees eager to begin their journey to the world of dragons. The clock struck noon, the PA system declared Anime Expo 2009 open, the convention hall doors opened...

The next 96 hours is largely a blur of incredible cosplay, thousands of free stickers and learning how to yell above the din to announce raffle results. Booth visitors ranged from the uninitiated to dedicated forum members. Hundreds of new Passports were registered. The wallscroll giveaways yielded audiences that filled the aisles around the booth. Sadly, the event wasn't without casualties. One of the demo machines overheated and failed to locate its hard drive after its third reboot. Thankfully, the humans promoting Dragonica Online persevered and endured. When the PA system announced Anime Expo 2009 closed on July 5th, the Dragonica Online team walked away not only with an incredibly successful event which saw all of our wallscrolls, CBT invites and stickers claimed but also with the knowledge of how to make our next event even bigger, better and more undeniably awesome.

Arigato and sayonara, Anime Expo 2009! Comic-Con looms in the not-so-far-off distance and we are ready for it because of your teachings.

Dragonica Online Closed Beta Test is LIVE!

With the Dragonica Online Closed Beta Test having gone live at 2:00pm PT this afternoon, here's a simple five-step guide explaining how to get started:

1. Register your THQ*ICE Passport.
2. Sign up for CBT.
3. Apply your Activation Key.
4. Download the CBT game client.
5. Install the CBT game client.

If you've completed the first two steps, you are in our tester pool for CBT. This means you will be selected at random to receive an email containing an Activation Key. Waves of emails will be sent out starting today and over the course of this week. Each subsequent wave will bring more testers into the CBT. Be certain to check your Spam filter!

ALL Activation Keys have a set time at which they can be applied to your THQ*ICE Passport. An error message will result if the Activation Key cannot be applied until a later time.

If you participated in the Preview Beta Test, you do not require an Activation Key. You can update your PBT client or download the CBT client and start playing.

Dragonica Online Exhibiting at Anime Expo 2009

Starting Thursday, July 2nd, the THQ*ICE team will be attending Anime Expo 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, showcasing Dragonica Online to thousands of attendees. Visitors to the THQ*ICE booth, #428, will receive Closed Beta Test access, "Wings of Paris" stickers, an exclusive Anime Expo in-game balloon and be able to set up an account and start playing right there in the middle of the show. If that wasn't enough, all visitors who create their THQ*ICE Passport at our booth and have the chance to win Dragonica Online wallscrolls, two raffled off each day of Anime Expo.

Game news site 1UP.com has published an article detailing Dragonica Online's rapidly arriving Closed Beta Test, slated to launch June 30th. Links to our many social media outlets and a brief summary of the THQ*ICE joint venture lead off the piece. Here's a meaty passage:

For the uninitiated, Dragonica is a combination free-to-play MMO/side-scrolling action game. So instead of mouse-clicking and spamming the number buttons to watch a bunch of combat animations, you actually have to do stuff like run, jump, and attack like you would in an action game. In fact, the game's combo counter even tracks how many successful blows you've landed; a successful string of attacks (let's say 50 hits on the combo counter) usually results in an experience point boost. Another gauge, the monster counter, tracks how many foes you've beaten in succession without being taken down yourself; beating up 100 monsters in a row could earn you a special treasure chest with even more loot than usual.

Show Your Skill at Class Builds!

With the Closed Beta Test start date of June 30th announced and our First Steps character guide contest underway, we're like to introduce our second Closed Beta Test contest, Skilled Builder. This event tasks players to select the base class of their choosing, Warrior, Thief, Magician or Archer, and assemble a collection of skills from that class' skill tree. These skill collections called "class builds" or simply "builds". Many of our active forum members have had some hands-on experience with Dragonica Online and no doubt each and every one of those members have a build that is both near and dear to them and capable of utterly pwning any monster or PvPer who dares confront it.

Ready to divulge your class build secrets for the ability to get your first Closed Beta Test character boosted to level 20 immediately? Then show us you're a:

Author a level 20 character build for either the Archer, Magician, Thief or Warrior. Builds need only list which skills they'd select, to what rank they'd raise them to and why the build is awesomesauce (read: good). This can be due to performance in PvE or PvP but please remember that a summary of the build's function is necessary. Builds can be typed, drawn, spoken, written in invisible ink: the choice is yours. Remember that builds will be judged based on their potency and to a lesser extent on their legibility. After the contest ends, submissions will be judged by THQ*ICE staff. Eight character build submissions will be selected as winners, two per class. Winners will receive a Dragonica Online Closed Beta Test Activation Key and be granted a level 20 character of the subject class of their winning submission. Additionally, winning submissions will be featured in our upcoming Class Subforum sections as a stickied thread.

As our forum-goers and Preview Beta Test participants heard over the course of last week, E3 2009 was a remarkably frenetic and successful event for the Dragonica Online Team. An impressive number of media representatives came to visit us and experience Dragonica Online first-hand. Massively.com has published a lengthy "impressions" piece on the game, a snippet of which can be found here:

Continuing the somewhat recurring theme at E3 2009 of "what was old is new again," Dragonica Online has taken the traditional 2D side-scroller format and transitioned it to 3D. The resulting environment will be friendly to any of the Night Elves you see endlessly bouncing around World of Warcraft and fans of nostalgic action RPGs like Secret of Mana.

The game sports fast and furious real-time combat, crafting, guilds, dungeon raids, PvP, and a light-hearted atmosphere. It didn't take us long to realize that Dragonica doesn't take itself too seriously. For example, in the demo, we saw an archer battling shark pirates who were wielding swordfish. We're obviously not in Middle Earth here.

Following up their "Pre-E3" preview of Dragonica Online, IGN.com has published a summary of Dragonica Online's character classes: the Warrior, the Magician, the Archer and the Thief. Here is a brief passage:

The 2D side scrolling action with 3D characters and monsters will be released later this year, and will introduce adventurers to the battle against the Dark Dragon Elga, whose agents are threatening to release the creature from its prison and spread evil across the land. As a new hero that has chosen to take up arms against Elga and his followers, you will gain separate equipment, skills and combos based on your class to help you in your quests through dungeons and maps.

As some have already noticed, the Official Dragonica Online Forum has started growing in more ways than just population and activity! A new category called Beta Information has been created to focus on thread related to our Preview Beta Test coming up on May 29th. These threads can help visitors sign up for the beta, learn about Activation Keys and find out more about the PBT's details.

Over the course of next week, a new overall forum structure will be introduced. The new subforums will encourage discussion across a wide range of subjects including gameplay modes, character clases, and off-topic chat. Got a suggestion for an area of discussion? Voice it on the forums!

Dragonica Online Preview Beta Test Starts May 29th!

Dragonicans! Hear ye, hear ye!

The long-awaited start date of THQ*ICE's Dragonica Online Preview Beta Test has been announced! Next Friday, May 29th, invited beta testers will begin their journey to the world of dragons! The Preview Beta Test or PBT will feature an updated Dragonica Online game client with numerous fixes sourced from player feedback during our Alpha Test this past April. Ben Serviss, our Product Manager, will be making a Windia Portal blog post detailing the specifics as to what new changes Dragonica Online has seen.

Can't wait that long? Read on! In addition to the PBT we will be hosting a Sneak Preview Beta Test or SPBT which will begin two days ahead of the main phase. This early portal to the world of dragons will open for a small number of invited beta testers, granting them 48 hours of exclusive access to Dragonica Online. As there is no non-disclosure agreement for any of our test phases, these first explorers of Windia and beyond will be free to report their findings to the entire community through text or visuals.

Want a beta invite? Look no further than the official Dragonica Online forums! Multiple contests and events have begun or will be starting in the coming days, the prizes of which are invites to all of our beta tests in addition to in-game items. A new one will be launching later today! All that's needed to participate is a THQ*ICE Passport ID which can be created in a matter of seconds right here.

The Dragonica Conquest, our first series of community events, concludes with Part III, the wallpaper contest. Combining the disciplines demonstrated in Parts I and II, creating striking and functional wallpapers involves an eye for framing, composition, and most of all subject matter. As with Part I and II, your work may be featured as part of Dragonica Online in a very real way! Read on for more information.

Dragonica Conquest Part III of III

The Wallpaper Battle has commenced! Utilize the high-resolution images of Dragonica Online provided via our official Flickr page to compose an image that encapsulates the game, focuses on a single character, or both! The choice is yours. The only limitation is that submissions must be at least 1024x768 pixels and have to demonstrate Dragonica Online in some manner. Beyond that, your creativity is invited to run wild! Full details can be found in this forum thread.

Dragonica Online's skill system allows for in-depth gameplay that is easy to play but difficult to master. Adventurers begin their journey with the basic skills for their chosen class, battling monsters in order to advance to the next level and learn new, powerful skills. As players reach new levels, they earn Skill Points that can be used to acquire more advanced abilities. With plenty of choices available, players can take their time to develop truly unique characters tailored for any kind of play style.
